This is a letter written by
Ollie Nothern Brent
February 1975
A copy was given to my sister Opal and has been passed down through our family and is the complete letter as written, February 1975.
Dear Lorene,
I will make a try at writing you the little I know about our ancestors. My grandfather McDonald, I think, was born and raised in Georgia ad his father lived with him and I have heard Mama talk of aunts and uncles on the McDonald side that lived there, Granpa was a farmer. I suppose at that time he would have been called a planter. He didn't believe in slavery. He only owned one slave and that, I think, was his personal servant, that was given to him by his father, but he hired negros for the farm work and also for house servants. He was a cotton farmer and had a cotton gin. He was also sheriff of the county. My grandmother McDonald was a Smith, Keziah Smith. She was raised in Louisiana. She only had one brother, Uncle Floyd Smith, he lived in Louisiana. I remember hearing mama and Uncle Sam say he had a nine hundred acre plantation and that the railroad ran right through it. At that time railroads were not so common as they are now.
Granpa's oldest son, Green McDonald, was a lawyer and Uncle Charles was a preacher and Uncle Sam, as you know, was a framer. Mama had four half sisters. They were a lot older than Mama. They were married, except for one, and lived in Georgia. They were Methodists and strictly Christian women. I used to write Aunt Francis. I remember her closing her letter one time with, "God be with you till we meet again" and said let's sing it. The McDonald's were all good singers and all except Aunt Ella played some kind of instrument.
This part is about our NORTHERN'S, I think the name was originally Nothern but was changed to Northern
My Grandfather Nothern was born in Tennessee but the Nothern family originally came to America from Whales and settled in North Carolina. Most of the Notherns were farmers. Uncle Jim, as you know, was a Methodist preacher and there were several teachers in the family. My father was a farmer and stone mason. He was a strict Methodist and was always a leader in the Methodist chruch. He was Superintendent of Sunday School for years. Except for Uncle Tom, all of my father's brothers were members of the Methodist church. Uncle Tom always said he was a Presbyterian but never joined nay church. But he was a good man and well liked by everybody, so was Uncle Ed. They used to joke about their offices. Uncle Tom was road overseer of Gainsborough Township for years and also a school director. Uncle Ed was Justice of the Peace of Gainsborough Township for years. He was elected while he boarded with us, when you were two years old, and was Justice at the time of his death. When Uncle Tom was road overseer it was a coveted job with farmers. It paid fifty dollars a month and men could take care of the roads and their farms also.
My grandmother on my father's side was Francis Caroline RICHARDSON, and her mother was an Anderson. She was born in Virginia in 1832, and of course, was raised when everybody had slaves. We kids used to like to get her started talking about old times. She used to talk a lot about Aunt Diane, that was her colored nurse. She and Aunt Martha were twins. She said they went to bed one night with their girdles on and were going to sleep in them so they would be slim. She said Aunt Diane was tucking the covers around them and happened to feel their girdles or lace jackets as they were called then. She said she got the sissors and cut the strings and took them off of them. They moved from Virginia to Dixon County, Tennessee, but I have forgotten how old she was when they moved to Tennessee. She had one brother, Jim RICHARDSON. He was taken prisoner and died in a prison camp in Illionis. I can't think of the name of the camp right now but I know you have read of it in history as a horrible place. Gram didn't like Lincoln, because of her brother being kept in prison until he died and because of the condition of the prison camp.
They left Tennessee and moved to Kentucky near Hopkinsville, during the Civil War because Bushwhackers got so bad. She said they killed livestock and destroyed property. I have forgotten whether it was Bushwackers or Yankee soldiers that shot their dog with one of the little boys sitting astride it.
Grandma Nothern was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a good old woman. She is who we get our love for books from. She read a lot and had an unusually good memory. As long as she has been dead Harold said McKinley Huddleston said he could remember when someone couldn't think of something that had happened in the past they would say "Ask Aunt Ann she will know". My grandmother's father died when she was a little girl. I think he was pretty well off, but she said her mother wasn't a good manager and ran through all her father's property. Grandfather McDonald lost his property during the Civil War. Besides the Yankees destroying his livestock and other property, he had his money in Conferate money and of course after the war it wasn't worth hardly anything.
If you want to know anything else, write and ask me.
Lots of love.
Mom

Lorena angler Atkinson dies in boat wreck
From staff and wire reports
Professional bass fisherman Jimmy Atkinson of Lorena and his fishing partner were killed and another man seriously injured Wednesday when their boats collided on the Hudson River on the first day of the BASSmaster New York Invitational.
Sgt. Walter Jimmy Atkinson Schelling of the state police at CatskilL N.Y., said Atkinson, 38, and Daniel Barragan, 36, of Little Falls, N.Y., were in a fiberglass fishing boat coming around a bend in the river at high speed when they collided with a boat piloted by Leslie Foster, 65, of Fulton, NY. Foster was listed in stable condition with a hip fracture at Catskill Memorial Hospital Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m.
The men were among 290 anglers participating in the $137,000 BASSmaster event, which is part of a series of events for professional anglers.
Joy Chambers, a spokeswoman for BASSmasters, based in Montgomery. Ala., said Atkinson and Barragan, whom he had drawn as his partner for the day, were returning to weigh in their catch. Foster apparently had just put his partner ashore to bring their trailer to the boat ramp after they had finished weighing in. He was returning to his dock when the accident occurred.
"They surprised each other coming around the bend. They tried to avoid a collision but
veered right into each other," Schelling said.
Schelling said Foster's boat went over the top of the other craft and crushed the two men underneath. Both were killed instantly, according to the coroner's report.
The fatalities are the first in the history of the BASSmasters tournaments, which began in 1967, Chambers said.
Atkinson was starting his third year as a professional after he and his wife Jan had established numerous records competing in Central Texas club tournaments. In his first full year on the BASSmaster tour, he qualified for the prestigious year-end BASSmaster Classic and finished in the Top 10.
"When I started into this, I thought in terms of staying with it til I'm 40," Atkinson had said recently. "Right now, I'd say I'll stay as long as I continue to improve.
"This is the year I want to win," he said. "I want to qualify for the Classic again. I want to be in the Top 10 at the end of all the qualifying tournaments. And I want to win the Classic."
Atkinson's friends were shocked and saddened by news of his death.
"People thought we were brothers, and I felt like we were." said Lorena's Tom Flanary, one of many area anglers schooled in the sport by Atkinson. "We feel so for Jan and the family, and this is devastating to all of us who knew him and liked him and admired him so. He was our friend, and somebody we looked up to. He was the standard for bass fishermen who knew him."
"We're all in shock," said Bob Davis, a friend who had fished with Atkinson many times. "It's going to be this way for a long time."

He died June 30, 1930.
He was married to Estella Bruton over thirty years ago and leaves his devoted wife and twelve excellent children to mourn his loss.
His funeral was preached by Eld. A. D. Hinkle. His remains were laid to rest in the Prairie Grove Cemetery.
Where he leaves a wide circle of friends and his people in the church feel they have lost a real christian brother.
Therefore be it resolved that a copy of this be spread on the church records and a copy be sent to the Baptist Progress. .... Committee

This Christian Mother was the Eldest child of a family of ten noble Christian men and women whose parents were Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Ballew who are deceased. She was married to W. B. Her husband W. B. Northern died in November 1904 leaving this mother to rear and educate her children to the best of her abilities. For this cause she gave her best. Her toiling hands never idle or grew weary in will doing, her long life of useful is far fruit of the spirit.
Where as God in his wisdom saw fit to call from our midst a most faithful friend, sister, Mother and where as we feel God has blessed the lives of others with the life and example of this Mother and Sister and where as we now bow ourselves in the most humble submission to Him who doith all things well.
We laid her to rest in the Prairie Grove Cemetery, Beneath a mound of lovely flowers to await the resurrection of those who sleep. Burial services were conducted by Eld. F. R. Vaughtn of Blooming Grove Texas who reminded us of the fact that the Earth has no Sorrow that God cannot heal.
Be it resolved that the Prairie Grove Missionary Baptist Church extend her most sincere sympathy to each of her children and loved ones and that a copy of the Resolution be presented to each of her children and that a copy be sent to the Baptist Progress. ... Committee

The Blooming Grove Rustler - Nov 12, 1914
Fred L. Barham
Fred Barham died Thursday of last week after a brief illness with appendicitis. Specialists from Dallas came for an operation, but after consulting with local physician it was decided that an operation would not save him.
Fred Barham was one of the best citizens in this entire community. Born and raised here, he grew up with the country and everybody knew him and admired him for his excellent qualities. He was a prosperous farmer, a loving husband, patient and kind father, member of the Christian Church. He was comparatively you, being 49 years old, a useful, strong-minded man whose heart went out for the unfortunate and down-trodden.
The deceased was an all-round splendid citizen and his place in church and society will be hard to fill, and the excellent record left behind may serve as a guide to others coming on.
The funeral services were held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Friday at 2 pm by Elder Crane and a large concourse of friends were present. The services were very solemn and the tribute was very appropriate. | Frederick Lee Barham

By Helen Barry Northern
We were told that our grandparents , Michael Barry and Elizabeth Hines came to America because of the potato famine in Ireland. The years of the famine were 1845-47. Michael was born in either 1846 or 47 and Elizabeth was born in 1848. So it was the conditions that existed after the famine that caused them to leave Ireland.
Don't know whether they came as adults or whether their parents brought them over as young children. (There's lots of gaps in my research) However, or when ever they came, they did come before the Statue of Liberty(1886) and before the Immigration Depot at Ellis Island was opened(1890-1954). We were told that Michael and Elizabeth did not meet until they came to this country.
JEANETTE- Dad's adopted sister
Jeanette was probably about 6 year old when adopted from the Infant Asylum in Norwood, Ohio. Her name was Julia Nagle was changed to Jeanette Barry. She always wished that she knew who her parents were and what became of her brother who was with her in the orphanage. I wrote some letters to Ohio trying to find out for her but was never able to get any information. The Catholic diocese there answered my inquiries with a very stilted, formal letter saying it was their policy not to reveal such information. Jeanette was in her seventies when I made these inquiries- how in the devil could revealing her background cause any scandal at that late date!!
In many conversations with her, in the years before she died in 1983, I learned that she dearly loved her new father and called him "Pop". She didn't have too many memories of her new Mother. I believe that Grandma Barry was already in poor health at the time of Jeanette's adoption and shortly thereafter she was confined to a nursing home in New Albany, Indiana. Dad often took Jeanette to visit his mother and always warned her before hand to "have her manners". (Jeanette always admitted that she was not a well-behaved little girl.) She remembered from those visits that Grandma would make a few comments her dress was pretty, she looked real nice, etc. But other than those few remarks, Grandma Barry didn't have too much to say to her.
Jeanette lived with Pop and her brothers, Dad and Tom, in the upstairs part of 633. William was already married to Agnes Watts and they lived on the first floor. (Note: Dad had one sister, Katie. who died in 1890 at the age of 16. The adoption of Jeanette in about 1892 was, I think, an attempt to ease Grandma Barry's grief with the joy of having another daughter to raise.)
Jeanette remembered the day Pop was stricken and she found him lying on the hall floor. Unable to lift him, she ran downstairs to Agnes for help-who didn't believe her at first.- and an ambulance was sent for. She remembered standing at the side gate when they carried Pop out, and the very last thing he said to her was"Be a good girl, Jeanette." He died November 1, 1905.
Dad, Jeanette's favorite brother was appointed her guardian after Pop died. At the time he was 28 years old and single. he placed her in a home run by Sisters in Cedar Grove, Ky. and visited her there every week. He always left money with the Sisters for Jeanette to buy candy and treats during the week. The sisters were always telling Dad that he was spoiling her.
Dad and Mother were married in November 1906 and soon thereafter Jeanette came home to live them at 633.
Mother's father John Michael Hennessy died in August of 1905. Mother told us that when she first began dating Dad her father was very pleased. He said John Barry was a fine man and not one of those "damn cigarette Pimps". Incidentally, Mother and all of her brothers and sisters always said "Father" never Dad. Sounds rather formal doesn't it?
Michael Barry at the time of his death was a Police Lieutenant and moderately well-to-do. He owned several pieces of rental property as well as his own home at 633. (Editor's Note: Records suggest that he owned property at 719 East Oldham as well as 633. 719 Oldham is still standing. I think he lived at 719 Oldham first and then built 633.) He left all properties to his three sons to be divided equally. Soon after Mother and dad were married he met with his two brothers and bought out their share of the family home. Both Tom and Will were married by then and living elsewhere.
Mary Elizabeth, their first child, was born September 15, 1907. Together with the new baby Mother also had the care of Jeanette. And from what Mother told us and from what Jeanette herself admitted this was quite a job!. Jeanette was headstrong and resented having to obey someone so young-Mother was only 23. Mother said that most evenings when Dad came home from work, Jeanette would run to him complaining of what "Winnie" had said or made her do or what Winnie wouldn't let her do! Of course, after Jeanette grew up she came to love Mother very much and regretted all the trouble she had caused her. She said she often wondered why Winnie hadn't killed her-she certainly had given her reason enough.
Grandma Barry-Dad's Mother-was still in the nursing home in New Albany. At the urging of her own Mother, Mother had her mother-in-law brought home to 633. Grandma Hennessy thought 633 was such a lovely home and that it was only right that Grandma Barry should be allowed to spend the remaining months of her life in what had been her home.. She died there in October 1908 or 1909. (Mother's own notes and the grave marker disagree on the year.)
When Jeanette was about 16 years old she ran away from home and cause Dad and Mother some worried days until Dad found her. She had gotten a job at the Courier Jornal Job Printing Company running a foot press and the man who hired her happened to be a friend of Dad's. He called Dad to tell him about it and also told him that she had rented a room in the downtown section of Louisville. Mother and Dad decided not to make Jeanette come back home. With the help of a priest at St. Louis Bertrand's, Dad was able to arrange for Jeanette to live at the Visitation Home, a home for working girls run by the Sisters of Charity. Everyone was happier now-no conflicts of authority-and Jeanette came often to visit Mother and Dad.
All nine children of Mother and Dad's were born in the upstairs bedroom of 633 and Dr. John Keaney was the Doctor every time.
The Uncle Tony Story- Anthony Rawley was Mother's bachelor Uncle(brother of her Mother). He was crippled, crippled by a log falling on his leg when he was just a young boy. Or at least that's what he said. He told so many stories-some true, some not. But his young nieces and nephews believed every one of them. He was bald and we believed he was scalped by Indians because that's what he told us. He took off his hat only to eat, sleep and in Church.
He had no permanent job, no permanent home. When Grandma Barry died she was "waked" at 633 and Uncle Tony came to pay his respects. The weather that night was rainy and stormy. When he was preparing to leave, Dad asked Mother where Unk would be going, where he would be spending the night. Mother said she didn't know, probably some rooming house. Dad didn't think Unk should be leaving in such bad weather and suggested that he spend the night in the room over what we always called the shed, but was really a garage. I guess it was never called a garage because we never had a car. Two elderly ladies had at one time rented the room for living quarters but it was now vacant.
Well--Unk spent the night there and almost every other night until he died.* Dad was convinced that Unk held the record for "longest visit at a Wake". He never had a steady job during all those years he lived with us. Dad would arrange to get a political job for him every now and then, but Unk never kept them for very long. But Dad said he more than earned his keep. He got up early every morning made the fire in the furnace and made the coffee.( Dad didn't want those jobs!) He was also a big help to Mother rocking babies to sleep and taking care of us when Mother and Dad went out. On top of that, he was a lot of fun and we all loved him. Everyone should have an Uncle Tony live with them while they are growing up,
During the last months of Unk's life, he was in a private nursing home in the West End of Louisville. We all visited hin there, but Pete and Tom McRaith were his most faithful visitors. Pete went every week and Tom went whenever he was in town. And he always managed to sneak a little bourbon in to Unk. I don't have the date of Unk's death. Note: My fellow historian, Joe, believes that the first part of Unk's stay with us was spent in 633 and that he didn't take up residence in the room over the shed until sometime later.

History of Wolfe Island, written by Mrs. Ruth Hawkins: ..."In the first decades of the 19th century about 15 families constituted its european population. These were all located on the Grant and Langan seigneury which after the change in 1823 could be bought from 5-6 dollars per acres, or leased for 1 shilling per acre per annum for long terms as long as 99 years. Among the names of early settlers from that time are noted those of Bennett, Davis, Mozier or Mosier, Hitchcock, Martin, Spoor, Wilson, Hinchley, and Staley some being of United Empire Loyalist descent and most having still descendents on the Island."

Carrie Mae Raley Snider
A long life that was filled with love and service for both family and the community concluded mid-afteroon on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. Mrs. Carrie Mae Raley, 91, of Dawson, passed away in a Corsicana nursing home after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with Rev. Mickey Loftis officiating. Interment will follow at Dresden Cemetery in Navarro County.
Born April 23, 1923, in Brushie Prairie, Carrie was the first child of James Edward and Virgie Wood Berry. Carrie's family, who loved her so much, is part of her legacy. A long marriage of 34 years to the late Roy Raley brought five children who were a great source of pride for Carrie.
After spending many years raising her family, Carrie attended and graduated from nursing school in Hillsboro. Her nursing career extended 30 years, beginning in the early 60s in Corsicana's Shell Clinic. She also worked at hospitals in Wortham, Hillsboro and Hubbard. She was always a favorite with patients, with her professionalism, compassion and good humor and became affectionately known to patients and staff alike simply as "Raley." A vivid image for family, patients and co-workers would be Carrie outfitted in all white, wearing the signature starched nursing cap. She worked as a nurse in Hubbard for Dr. Ryman and then Dr. Javier until she retired in 1992. Once retired, she spent a lot of her time making quilts, piecing them or stitching one in its frame. She lived a long, rich life, making contributions to both her family and the community.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Raley, and her second husband, Jerome Snider.
Carrie is survived by her daughters Joyce Hubbard and husband B.D. of Dawson, Ruby Darden and husband Royce of Bowie and Linda Hodge and husband Darryl of Streetman; sons, Donald Raley and wife Anita of Dawson and Joe Raley and wife Elizabeth of Kountze; a sister, Dorothy Lee Adams of Arlington; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Carrie's grandson, Eddie Hodge and Roy Darden and great-grandsons Clinton Carlisle, Aaron Carlisle, Cheston Carlisle and Bradley Withrow.

BERRY, JOHN (1786-1866). John Berry, pioneer colonist, gunsmith, and blacksmith, was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He fought in the War of 1812. He moved from Christian Settlement, Illinois, to Blue Spring, Indiana, in 1816. Berry had three sons by his first wife, Betsy (Smothers), daughter of William Smothers,qv whom he married about 1810 and who died in Indiana; three daughters by Gracie Treat, whom he married on July 13, 1819; and twelve children by Hannah Devore, whom he married in Liberty, Texas, on May 8, 1831. In late 1826 he moved his family to the Atascosito District on the lower Trinity River in Texas. Mexico awarded him a lot in Liberty when it organized the municipality in May 1831. As a gunsmith, blacksmith, knifesmith, and furniture builder Berry qualified for the lot as an artisan. Sometime before 1834 he moved to Mina, later called Bastrop, where Mexico awarded him two town lots and a twelve-acre farm lot as an artisan. David Crockett,qv traveling on the Old San Antonio Roadqv toward the Alamo,qv stopped at Mina while Berry repaired Crockett's famous rifle, Old Betsey. Berry's three sons by his first wife were Joseph, John Bate, and Andrew Jackson Berry.qqv All three sons were Texas Rangersqv before and after the Texas Revolution,qv all served in the Army of the Republic of Texas,qv and all fought in the battle of Plum Creek.qv Berry, his wife Hannah, and their small children took refuge at Fort Parker during the revolution, and upon returning to Bastrop found their home burned to the ground. In 1840 the family moved to the settlement that later became Caldwell in Burleson County, where they lived for the next ten years. The Texas Congress named Caldwell as the county seat in 1840, but the county was not organized until 1846. The Berry family was living there at the time. Berry applied to be a Robertson colonist on November 6, 1835, but did not settle on his league of land, located about three miles northeast of Georgetown, until the winter of 1846. He built a spring-driven gristmill, later called Gann's Mill, on Berry Creek. In 1848 he served as a commissioner, named by the Texas legislature, to organize Williamson County. For the fourth time, he was living in a Texas county seat when the county was organized. Berry was a member of the Church of Christ; his third wife, Hannah, was a faithful Baptist. Their home at Berry Creek was regularly used for Baptist services. Berry died on December 24, 1866, and is buried in a small family cemetery on the Berry league. His grave is marked by a plaque placed by the Daughters of the War of 1812. Five of Berry's sons and three of his sons-in-law served in the Confederate Army. His most distinguished direct descendant was his great-grandson Audie Murphy.qv On the grounds of the Williamson County Courthouse, the buhrstone from the Berry Mill is preserved beneath a state historical marker placed for Berry, whose descendants meet annually to commemorate the Berry family's service to Texas.

In May, 1881, the Crittenden Press reported t hat she was "visiting the family of Rev J.W. Bigham in Layfayette." In fact, sh e had been removed to Hopkinsville, as well. Was attorney and, for a time, county clerk of Crittenden County Kentucky, after his u ncle held the position. His dad was a lawyer and County Clerk at Salem, Livings ton Co., but died when he was 8. His mom remarried soon; he and his younger b ro were reared in a Smithland, Livingston Cnty home by his step-dad, a slave tr ader. He held 26 slaves at 1850. The home, "Dallam-Bush" house is on the Nati onal Register of Historic Places.
At age 25, Robert married 17 yr old Lavi nia, the daughter of his Step-father's brother. Though they may have appeared First Cousins, they were not actually blood relatives.
In 1849, he received a land grant for 50 acres along Hurricane Creek.
1850 Kentucky Slave Schedul e lists Robert's ownership of 5 slaves: most adult females, so they assumed to be house servants as opposed to farm laborers. His father willed him several sl aves at his 1833 death; some of these must be those slaves. The 1860 census sh ows no increase.
The 22 Jan 1856 wedding of Robert Coffield and Ellen S. Big ham was held at his house. Winessed by D. Gilliam, Coleman, Woods "Guardian pr esent and consenting." Ellen S. is buried in Riddle Cemetary (22 Feb 1837 - 22 Oct 1858) She left behind a young son. I believe swhe may be the child oif H arvey and Sarah (Rice).
The 1860 census shows Sarah H. residing with them; s he is 21 and a school teacxher. This is Harvey W. Bighams' daugter.
HIs Jan 1863 is curious. He is not located in Union Records, nor Kentucky CSA. He may have been CSA, from Carrol Co., TN.
Or, they may be a link between the Marion Cn ty Courthouse burning by "guerillas" in Jan 1863. He was a lawyer, and had bee n county clerk, so maybe he was personally involved....
Probate Mar 1863 was for a will he had written Apr 22 1852, over ten years earlier after the first of his 5 children were born. Witnessed by CC Bigham.

Wm II has two sons with similar names: William III "Jr" , born California, 1933, had mis-spelled birth-certificate. The family name of "Lycurgus" was mis-spelled "Lycurtus", therefore, dad made sure it was spelled correctly when given to his youngest son, Willliam Lycurgus Bigham IV, born California, 1965.
The 1930 census lists him as a "tool nipper" in Copper Mines. Residing in the community of Lowell, Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, he had been married 2 years, with a 1 3/12 old daughter. Little more than a decade later, all housing and 90% of the business district of Lowell was relocated and/or demolished, as Phelps Dodge dug into the ground and created the Lavendar Pit, a large Open Pit Copper Mine where the houses of Lowell once stood.
Event: His 1937 Divorce status made him WWII draft-eligible. He served 13 months before receiving an honorable discharge. Military Discharge 1944 Florida?
