"The SPEARMAN book only has about one paragraph on Rev. Tombs, in reference to Ann Dawson Tombs. Following is a direct copy:
John Spearman....was married to Ann Dawson Toombs, daughter of Gabriel Toombs and Ann Dawson on December 14, 1790. Gabriel TOOMBS moved his family to Wilkes County, Georgia about 1785 and died there in 1799. The Spearman and Toombs families were, according to legend, friends and neighbors in Virginia for many years. John came to Wilkes County, Georgia in about 1790 or before and prior to his marriage in December 1790. John is listed on the 1801 Tax Digest of Wilkes County owning 100 acres of land on Beaverdam Creek. He recieved for services in the Revolutionary WAr, a grant of 92 acres of land in 1806 and by 1815 owned several more tracts of land. John SPEARMAN received a share of the slaves of Gabriel TOOMBS in right of his wife Ann Dawson TOMBS SPEARMAN at the death of Gabriel's wife, Ann in 1807. John is also found as one of the executors of brother-in- law Robert TOOMBS estate and as guardian of the minor childrenof sisters-in-law, Mary (TOOMBS) BARRETT, and Sally ( TOMBS) DAWSON. John moved his family in about 1822 to Jasper County, Georgia wereh he died in August 1827. He is buried in an old cemetery on the site of the former Calvary Church near Shady Dale. His grave was His wife, Ann Dawson is buried there also. She was reported to be blind for the last nine years of her life and their youngest son, Edmund, was assigned to take care of her. She died in 1829."
On the death of Robert A. Toombs, Sr., John Spearman was named in his will as his Executor for real estate.
John is buried in Mt. Zion/Calvary Methodist Cemetery located about two miles East of Shady Dale, Ga. on the Madison Hwy., Georgia 83. The church was relocated to Shady Dale. It is North of the road, about 100 yards into the forest. On the south side of the road is a silo in a pasture. There are many graves including members of the Geiger family but few are marked. The graves of John and Ann Dawson Toombs have stone walls surrounding them. John's has a Revolutionary War headstone next to it that reads: John Spearman, Georgia Troups, Rev. War. It was dedicated by the DAR on June 11, 1939. Ann's is not marked.
From the Roster of Rev. Soldiers, Vol. 1 John Spearman, Sr. , Jasper County, drew land in the 1827 Ga. land lottery. Early family records report that he received 3,000 acres of land in Gilmer County, Ga. as a bounty for his service during the Revolution.
Revolutionary War records list him in Capt. Adam Clement's Co., Virginia Militia. On May 1, 1781 he marched with Capt. Clements from Bedford County to the assistance of Gen'l Green in South Carolina.
